Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD)

Artas are committed to achieving Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD) outcomes for all projects. We believe ESD principles and are a matter for everyday consideration, not just for one-off iconic projects. We actively research issues, materials and products, are subscribers to the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Environmental Design Information Service and are a member of the Green Building Council of Australia.

Contemporary design requires an understanding that we are creating environment, which are not just bricks and timber, but ventilation, light, thermal conditioning and space. These environments are critically linked to our enjoyment, health, comfort and life experiences.

We are conscious of the fact that time, cost and quality are related to other ‘Eco-economic’ factors. Building owners are increasingly expecting quality design, value for money and extended lift cycle benefits. We are conscious of the ‘Upstream’ and ‘Downstream’ effects of design decisions and material selections in cost and ecological terms.

Our approach to design ensures that we plan our building with Environmentally Sustainable Design principles to:

·         Take maximum advantage of passive design principles such as solar access, natural ventilation and existing landscaping;

·         Reduce the impact on the site and local ecosystems;

·         Use elements such as windows, massing and external shading to increase energy efficiency;

·          Plan internal spaces into zones that require similar heating and cooling requirement;

·         Select and use materials that have lower environmental impact and beneficial lift cycle costing;

·         Ensure our building are appropriately insulated; and

·         Employ energy saving devices such as renewable energy sources, low energy lighting, energy efficient appliances/equipment and energy management systems

Artas Architects and Planners actively consider Environmental and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for material and product selections in terms of natural recourse usage, emissions and ongoing maintenance and replacement costs.

Quality Assurance

Artas Architects have achieved and maintain a 3rd Party Quality Assurance system complying with the International Standard ISO 9001. A management review of the Quality System is carried out at six monthly intervals. We have a genuine desire to improve all aspects of our Company, on an on-going basis. This approach continues to improve the architectural outcomes for our clients.
